No "Save prompt" on closing Excel

They say it's only easy if you know the answer, but I've never come across this before...

Can anyone help me with this probably easy function!

I'm running Excel 2010, and when I click on the X button to close the application, it automatically closes without giving me a save prompt beforehand!!! I normally save prior, but sods law, on the one occasion I don't, then I've lost the changes to the workbook as it didn't prompt me to save changes prior to closing!

Can anyone help in getting this function back on? (It did work in the past, but I can't for the life of me think what I've done to disable it!)

    Many thanks in advance

    Kev.

    Hi Kevpat,

Does the workbook contain a macro?

    Thanks for the response quekbc,

No, it doesn't contain any macros. It's just a normal standard record sheet holding weekly scrap data.

Strange thing is, it's not prompting to save now on any workbook I close down, no matter how big, how complicated or anything!

Hmm... intriguing. Sorry mate. Nothing pops to head at the moment.

    My next suspect is either,
    A) You've recently installed an add-in that's mucking up your Excel.
    B) Excel is mourning the loss of Steve Jobs.

A: You can answer that yourself.
B: Mind the cliche but, have you tried turning Excel off and turning it back on? Sometimes rebooting the whole pc/system helps too.

Re: No "Save prompt" on closing Excel

    Hi

I experienced exactly the same problem. I didn't install any Excel Addon; could it be a virus?
I read that you could disable/suppress this feature (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/213428):

Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied. This includes, but is not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. This article assumes that you are familiar with the programming language that is being demonstrated and with the tools that are used to create and to debug procedures. Microsoft support engineers can help explain the functionality of a particular procedure. However, they will not modify these examples to provide added functionality or construct procedures to meet your specific requirements.

To use either of the following examples, follow these steps:
Start Excel and open a new workbook.
Press ALT+F11 to start the Visual Basic editor.
On the Insert menu, click Module.
Type the sample macro code into the module sheet.
Press ALT+F11 to return to Excel.
In Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and in earlier versions of Excel, point to Macro on the Tools menu, and then click Macros.

In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, click Macros in the Code group on the Developer tab.

Note If the Developer tab is not available, consider the following steps:
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
In the Popular category, under Top options for working with Excel, click to select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK.
Select the macro that you want, and then click Run.
The Saved property returns the value False if changes have been made to a workbook since it was last saved.

You can use the reserved subroutine name "Auto_Close" to specify a macro that should run whenever a workbook is closed. By doing this, you can control how the document is handled when the user is finished and has instructed Excel to close the document.
Example 1: Close the workbook without saving changes

To force a workbook to close without saving any changes, type the following code in a Visual Basic module of that workbook:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Because the Saved property is set to True, Excel responds as though the workbook has already been saved and no changes have occurred since that last save.

The DisplayAlerts property of the program can be used for the same purpose. For example, the following macro turns DisplayAlerts off, closes the active workbook without saving changes, and then turns DisplayAlerts on again.
Please Login or Register to view this content.
You can also use the SaveChanges argument of the Close method.

The following macro closes the workbook without saving changes:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Example 2: Close the workbook and save the changes

To force a workbook to save changes, type the following code in a Visual Basic module of that workbook:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
This subprocedure checks to see if the file's Saved property is set to False. If so, the workbook has been changed since the last save, and those changes are saved.

Have you found a solution yet ?

I tried rebooting, but the problem persists.

    Regards
