remove entire row based on duplicates from single column

Hi Guys,

I have about 20-30 columns with a lot of data, over 800k rows. I have one column that contains a lot of duplicates, call it columnX. I want to remove entire rows if there are duplicates in columnX.

I can highlight the duplicates and filter them but this takes way too long with 800k rows, and also i want to be able to keep one of the rows, and only remove the duplicates.

I cant use the "remove duplicates" button either because this only removes "duplicate rows", not rows that have duplicates in a particular column.

Hi mike,

In Excel 2007 this feature is included. See http://www.mrexcel.com/tip138.shtml down towards the bottom on the Remove Duplicates Dialog.

You can select the column that has duplicate values you want to remove. I'm not sure how you'd do this using 2003 but 2007 and 2010 Excel have it built in.
