Help with updating vlookup table

I decided to build a dynamic spreadsheet with excel after many years away from the intricacies of the program. I have been piecing together the various aspects of the sheet using help videos and reading many of the posts from this forum. I am nearing completion and have finally hit a snag.

I have built an interpretive schedule that relies on a rating chart (updated daily) this chart is referenced in the main part of the sheet by a vlookup function.

I am stumped with this aspect: How can I update the rating sheet but not affect the past results.

Eg: Col A ratings are brought in using VLOOKUP from sheet 2, I want to update the ratings for todays games without the previous ratings changing for yesterdays games.

I hope that is as clear as mud. I may be going at this the wrong way and will correct if need be or just quit and start again.
