    AutoRecover not working?

    Windows 7
    Excel 2003

I have AutoRecover set to save my documents every 10 minutes.
The "Disable AutoRecover for this workbook" boxes are not checked.
The folder where Excel is allegedly saving my documents does not have my documents in it.

Please tell me there's a good reason to not throw my computer out the window right now.

    Re: AutoRecover not working?

Autorecover saves a snapshot recovery file of some sort, not your whole file. Further, it's a hidden file. Even further, it only does it while the file is open. If you close your file normally, the autorecover file isn't needed anymore and goes away. It's only for recovery of an abnormal Excel termination.

If your Excel file is called myexcelfile.xls, the recovery file will be called ~$myexcelfile.xls. Recovery files are stored in the same directory with the original file. You can see them if you enable "show hidden files" (I don't have Windows 7 so I'm not sure of the sequence to turn that on).

    "Show hidden files" is on.

There are no backup files in either the folder where the excel files are saved or in the folder where AutoRecover says it is saving them.

Are you checking while a file is open in Excel?

    Re: AutoRecover not working?

    OS: XP
    EXCEL 2003.
Just had a situation needing to recover an unsaved excel file (power cut)and couldn't find it straight away.
I had to enable "show hidden files and folders"
FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW>select SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
    Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\Philip(my name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel.
In the EXCEL folder there where 3 .xar (hidden) files and 1 .xlb file.
None had the name of my lost file.
I selected VIEW>DETAIL to change the folder view so I could see "date modified".
The file called " ~ar55B6.xar " looked a likely candidate so I double clicked and to my suprise it opened and it was the file I needed.
