    Smile Import from Access Query?

    Good morning,

I'm working with an Excel 2003 workbook and an Access 2003 database and have encountered a small problem.

I am able to import data from an Access table to an Excel workbook with no problem. The trouble is that I want to use one of my Access queries to pull the information, but the query does not appear as an option.

Do I need to build a query in Excel to pull the data, or is there a specific reason that my querie does not show? Some of my queries do appear as options, but not all of them, which seems odd.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Re: Import from Access Query?

I am confused by your posting.

Are you running a query in Access and then exporting the results to Excel? or

Are you exporting data from an Access table to excel and expect to run a query on that information? or

Are you trying to query an Access table from Excel? or

    Are you doing something else?

Please try to be as specific as possible in your explanation. Until we understand your issue, it is difficult to offer a solution.

    Re: Import from Access Query?

Sorry about my lack of clarity, I had to finish my post in a hurry before.

The Excel sheet is currently importing data from a table in the Access database, which works great.

The purpose of the database is to gather and calculate scores for about 50 employeed. Data is entered and calculated via queries to give a monthly percentage that we call "Quality."

The database also also allows us to manually enter 3 other scores "Average Handle Time," "Number of Calls," and "Coding %" which ends up in a table.

Currently, the Excel sheet, which is essentally a reort with charts, can pull the 3 scores from the table without any problem.

So, the "Quality" value in the database is calculated from an Access query and ends up in several Access reports.

What I'm trying to do is convince Excel to Import data from an Access query that combines the "Quality" query with the data from the table for the other 3 pieces of data.

The problem that occurs is, when I use the Import function in Excel, and select the database, I get a list of tables and queries. When I was just importing from the table, it was easy. I select the table and import and everything is great. However, I have a list of about 10 queries (listed as views in Excel), but my database has over 40 queries.

I'm wondering if Excel is only able to pull from Access queries if they are simple queries, as many of my queries reference other queries in the database. If that's not the case, I'm curious as to why I would only be allowed to pull data from certain queries.

I hope this helps explain. Thank you for your help.

    Re: Import from Access Query?

Why not run the query you want in Access and export it directly to excel? This seems to be the simplest solution. Why try to over-complicate it?

    Re: Import from Access Query?

Well, that sure did the trick for getting the data into the Excel sheet.

The trouble that I'm going to run into is that the data doesn't seem to be linked to the query (unless I'm missing something) in the same way as a refreshable data import would be.

The query data will change as the base tables change in the database and I don't want the user to have to run an export each time they need new data. as they're not terribly tech savvy (managers).

I appreciate the suggestion, and that certainly would resolve the issue if I were the one who's going to be running the report.

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

What is the SQL statement for the query and subquery?

    Re: Import from Access Query?

Thanks for your help, both of you.

After I posted the last question, I did some further research and made some adjustments to the Access query and got it all to work out.

The query was simply too complicated. I had a few additional things on file to compensate for an issue from when the database was initially build in OpenOffice Base. When I recreated it in Access I left in some things that Access is smart enough to compensate for.

It seems like if the query is doing ANYTHING besides collecting data from tables it loses its ability to be used in Excel.

Thank you both again for your help.
