My professor sent me a Statistics spreadsheet to do a project on the best of 8 items tested...she never went over how to fill out the spreadsheet. The problem im running into is after i fill in the cells in excel with my data i have another location where i have to put the data direction (up is better or down is better) all she said was we had to put a '+ or '- in these cells. That doesnt work. Excel won't calculate my total z score unless i put '+1 or '-1 but excel still says its not a correct formula. Does anyone know what the formula is for so excel will calculate up/down is better? I would e-mail my professor but the project is due tm morning.

You're asking that question as though it were a standard Excel feature....this question is very specific to your Excel file and we always recommend attaching a file if possible to illustrate what your data looks like, and what you want your results to look like. Depending on what time your project is due there may still be time to give you some help.

(Mods: Although this Excel task is related to homework, the question is a mechanical Excel question and is not simply asking for a homework answer.)

I don't see anything wrong with the calculations. You are getting a warning that you have numbers formatted as text but the formulas still work.

I have reformatted the -1, +1 part to use numbers and use custom formatting to show it the same way, but it looks like it doesn't change the end result.

In short, I'm having trouble understanding what you see as a problem.
