Converting formulas from .xls to .xlsm

    Hi

This is the first time I have posted so apolgies if I have done it incorrectly, however....

I recenly produced a series of workbooks that contained links to each other in the form of simple copy formulas. I produced this in a 2010 version but then proceeded to use it in 2007. The workbooks were thereafter listed as being in compatibility mode. Today I reopened the workbooks in 2010 again and converted all the files to the 2010 .xlsm format using the option on the file menu. It appears that some of the copy formulas have updated to recognise the new .xlsm format and some have remained in .xls and cannot link to the newly formatted workbooks. I have a feeling it may be something to do with absolute cell references but am not sure. Can anybody tell if and how I might simply convert all these formulas to recognise the new format without painstakingly altering all the individual formulas in each cell.

    Thanks & Regards

    Gianni

    Hi

Are there macros in your 2010 version of your workbook?

    Hello,

there's a bit of confusion here. Excel 2007 and 2010 use exactly the same file format. A file created with 2010 will open fine in 2007. No need for compatibility mode. That would only be required for 2003 or earlier.

xlsm is a file type for macro-enabled files. If you don't have VBA in your files, just use xlsx.

Any formula that works in an xls file will also work in an xlsx or xlsm file.

Can you give an example of a formula that "remained in .xls"?? Also absolute or relative cell referencing have no relation whatsoever to the file format.

Please give a few concrete examples. Attach a screenshot that shows the formula as you see it. Describe what you would expect to see instead.

    cheers,
