    numbering problem

    I have a situation where I am using 9 numbers (1 thru 9) arfranged in groups of three ie; 123,456,789, 124, 125, 126 etc. Each number appears on my chart 28 times and is never grouped with the same two numbers twice in these groups of three. May chart has a total of 84 unique groups of three numbers. My next goal is to use these three num ber groups and match them in groups of nine using all nne number (1 thru 9). Ie;
    123 389
    456 247
    789 156

    345 246
    168 179
    279 358

    689 469
    237 128
    145 357
These are just samples and not necessarily useful in completing the combinations.

I have tried doing this by guess or by gosh and end up with 5 or 6 groups of three numbers that can't be used together because of not having the needed numbers of the set. I am certain there is some logic type formula for doing this correctly, but I'm stumped at this point. I need this for a real life situation, this is not just a number puzzle. I've looked at some Sudoku puzzles but they have not been any help. So, any help with getting a handle on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS: Possibily, if I knew how to do, I could attach my Excel worksheet.

    Re: numbering problem

From looking at your numbers, I see they are all strictly ascending so I assume that sequences like 987 are not included. You also mention 84 combinations, which is the total number of combinations of 3 selected from 9, so you are covering all possible combinations. This is also consistent with each digit appearing in 28 combinations. So I'm with you so far.

I am not clear on the criteria you want to use to group them, and what you mean by "groups of three numbers that can't be used together because of not having the needed numbers of the set."

You can attach your Excel file by creating a new post (or editing your existing one then selecting Go Advanced), and then clicking on the little paper clip icon (Attachments) above the edit box and browsing for then uploading the file.

    Re: numbering problem

Hello, thanks for getting back to me on this. Yes you are with me on the 84 unique number sets....... I knew I wasn't explaining this very well. I'll see if I can do better with this approach. Lets say you had nine golfers, they assume numbers 1 thru 9 and they divide up into teams of three. All three teams (of three) meet and go golfing; 123 go first, 456 go next, 789 fo next. The next day they meet again using my unique number sets again assemble their team as 124 are on a team, 683 are on a team, 579 are on a team and golf day two. Day three is the same deal. They need to do this for 28 days always having a unique team of three. 84 sets of numbers are 28 groups of 9.

Another way of saying this; The numbers do not need to be in ascending order and is irrelevant, they just turned out that way when I did my chart. Now that I have the 84 unique three number sets (I'll refer to them as sets) I am trying to assemble them in groups of three sets. These groups need all nine numbers; example
    123
    478
    569

If you start with 123 there are ten possible two set pairs that fulfill that critera. At the bottom of my chart I have the ten pairs listed that could be grouped with 123.

I'm looking for 28 groups of 9 (three sets of 3) always having 1 thru 9 included in the mix. I have tried this by trial & error and ended mostly with errors at the end. Let me know if your still with me............
Opps the Go Advanced isn't working like you said. I will post this and work on getting the spreadsheet sent.

    Use this code.
Put your date in ROW 1 then run the macro
I will calculate all combinations of 1 through 9 in groups of 3

Hello and thanks for your code. I'm not very good with this sort of thing. I use and developed a few macros but this looks new to me. I will give it a try and see if I can work out the details.

I'm thinking I will get 840 results seeing that there is 10 possibles with each of the 84 sets. Thanks, I will give it a try or better yet if I could get more info on writing this code that would be great.

OK, I've copied this code to my worksheet and to a blank worksheet, added a row of 28 dates at the top and no luck. The macro runs fine but doesn't give me anything close to what we are talking about in either sheet. I may not understand completely. How should my worksheet look to start with for this to run effectively?
