Row headings missing

While working on a spreadsheet that I have used for more than a year, I noticed that the column headings were present, but the row headings (numbers) were missing. I have been unable to restore the row headings. This makes it difficult to verify formulas in the spreadsheet. My little bit of research indicated that Excel will not allow either column headings, or row headings without both being shown.

Any suggestions?

Did you try..
Tools > Options > View tab Check "Row and column headers" > OK
