How do I enter a working mathematical formula?

I know how to enter an equation using microsoft equation (which just displays the equation). But how do I enter an equation which actually refers to spreadsheet cells, that I can then copy and paste, like with a basic formula?

I want to enter the attached acoustics room mode formula, but I can't do it without having access to the mathematical functions like you get with the equation insert. I can start typing the formula, and then choose Insert>Function, and then Square Root, but then it won't let me specify the cells (^ is "squared isn't it?):

    =344/2*SQRT(A61^/C45^)

(A61 is the room mode number, C45 is the room length)

It would be nice if there was a way to enter the formula into the cell in the same way that you can enter an equation, because the equation method is so straightforward and simple.

    Thanks for any help.

Never mind, I've got it covered. Just multiplied each Cell number by itself, instead of using the ^ symbol

    Hi ianpwilliams,

The character "^" means "to the power" i.e. if you write "=2^5" in any cell without quotes, it will calculate as explained below:-

    2^5
    = 2x2x2x2x2
    = 32

Hence, to obtain square you should write A61^2
    cheers
