Question how to insert text as cell location in formula

Hello this is my first post! I hope to find some very much needed excel tips here.

    Let's say I have in cell A1 a text value of 'B1:B100'

I would like to use this text as a cell reference by calling it in a formula. For example:

    =average(B1:B100)

but instead of typing B1:B100, I want to use A1 somehow. What is the syntax I need to use? Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Try

    =AVERAGE(INDIRECT(A1))
