Adding up numbers in a column based on what is in another column in the same row.....

Crap title but I couldn't think howelse to explain it......

As you may tell I'm new to these forums and wondered if anyone could help.

I have a table let's say 5 columns wide and 5 rows long.

In column 1 I have a 'materials type' and in column 5 I have a 'weight'

What I want to do is look down column 1 and where a 'materials type' of a given value e.g. 'plastics' occurs take the corresponding value in column 5. I want to do this for all 5 rows until I've added up all the weights in column 5 that correspond to a materials type in column 1 of 'plastics'. This way I get the total weight of palstics in the table.

Is there a function or combination of functions to help with this?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Dr H,

You need to use the SumIf function to do this problem.
See the attached for the example.
    Or read http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...005209292.aspx
