View .xls files in Excel 97

I am running windows XP Pro and have Office 97 and Office 2010 installed. The reason for the XP is because it is needed by my company to run an old DOS program that I guess can't run on Windows 7. Anyways, I would liket to be able to open an excel document that has the .xls extension from within windows explorer using Excel 97. When I double click on an .xls file, it opens it in office 2010 just fine, but I don't want to have to have to open a file in Excel 97 every time I want to view it in 97 mode. I've tried right clicking on the file and selecting "open with Excel 97" but it still defaults to 2010. How do I fix this?

That's what I've been having to do. Is this the only way? Can you not change the default .xls file opening to be excel 97 for all .xls documents? Unacceptable. I can understand .xlsx opening in explorer when 2010 or 2007 is co-installed with office 97 but not .xls files.
