    Problem with link on website

I am currently maintaining a website for a car club, but I have a problem with a link.
The site includes an Excel worksheet containing heaps of data, I am hoping to create links between specific Excel cells and folders that contain PDF files in another area that provides more info.
I am familiar with links but unable to get this to work; there are heaps of other links on the website (not involving Excel), all work fine except for these.
An example: I create the hyperlink with complete path, all appears normal, however when I try to use the link it does not open , I click on the "edit hyperlink button' the address is now in the Temp file without the complete path; I have tried many times , always with the same result.
The website files are in folder called website, if I enter that folder and click on the link in the Excel document it works fine but will not function from the live website.
I am not even sure that it is an Excel problem at this stage; any ideas?

    Hi there,

Rather than editing the hyperlink via 'Edit hyperlink button', you could possibly try using the HYPERLINK function. As far as I know this 'hardwires' the link therein bypassing any problems that might occur when setting up a link locally then uploading to the website.

Thanks for that, I did say that I created a hyperlink, this was in the normal fashion, I mentioned the edit hyperlink button just to indicate that there had been an alteration to the link without any input from me.

Re: Problem with link on website

    Hello,

    a few questions:
The site includes an Excel worksheet
How does the site contain that sheet? Is the Excel file stored on the site?

An example: I create the hyperlink with complete path,
How/where do you create a hyperlink? In the Excel file? What does the hyperlink refer to?

however when I try to use the link it does not open
How does "use the hyperlink" manifest? Do you open the Excel file and click on a hyperlink in an Excel cell?

    I click on the "edit hyperlink button' the address is now in the Temp file without the complete path;
When you open an Excel file that is stored on a web site, it will be downloaded to your Temp folder. Depending on how the hyperlinks within that file are set up, they will now refer to the temp folder.

The website files are in folder called website, if I enter that folder
How do you "enter" that folder? Can other users also "enter" that folder?

Please keep in mind that Excel is essentially a desktop application for a local environment. On your PC or in your company network, you can create hyperlinks to other documents on your PC or in your company network.

But if you publish such a file to the Web, don't expect the same behaviour. You definitely cannot create hyperlinks between two Excel files, then upload both files to your website and expect the hyperlinks to work like they do on your local PC. That's not how the internet works.

I'm not quite sure if this is doable at all, but if it is, you will need to get a much better understanding of how references work.

    cheers,

    Hello,

    a few questions:

All the files relating to the website are in "website folder"

An example: I create the hyperlink with complete path,
How/where do you create a hyperlink? In the Excel file? What does the hyperlink refer to?
There is a date in the left hand column of the Excel worksheet which I have followed normal hyperlink procedure to link to another file or folder in the "website" folder

however when I try to use the link it does not open
How does "use the hyperlink" manifest? Do you open the Excel file and click on a hyperlink in an Excel cell?
    Yes

    I click on the "edit hyperlink button' the address is now in the Temp file without the complete path;
When you open an Excel file that is stored on a web site, it will be downloaded to your Temp folder. Depending on how the hyperlinks within that file are set up, they will now refer to the temp folder.
on a page of the website is a link to the Excel worksheet, I click on that and I receive an option to download the worksheet, click on the link in the worksheet, message is "cannot open this file" this is where the problem lies, and I cannot see how the situation can be overcome

The website files are in folder called website, if I enter that folder
How do you "enter" that folder? Can other users also "enter" that folder?
The website folder contains all the files that are relevant to the website and are uploaded by me, no others have access to this folder as such.
Members have access to the whole "live" website

Please keep in mind that Excel is essentially a desktop application for a local environment. On your PC or in your company network, you can create hyperlinks to other documents on your PC or in your company network.

But if you publish such a file to the Web, don't expect the same behaviour. You definitely cannot create hyperlinks between two Excel files, then upload both files to your website and expect the hyperlinks to work like they do on your local PC. That's not how the internet works.

I'm not quite sure if this is doable at all, but if it is, you will need to get a much better understanding of how references work.
I can see what you are saying; there are myriad links on the site that function normally, but it seems that in this particular case involving Excel it will not work. I cannot see that even though it is an Excel file, providing the complete path in the hyperlink it should work as a normal link. Is there a way that the Excel document be incorporated as a page rather than a download?
Perhaps you might have a suggestion if I outline what I am trying to do.
The website includes many years of the monthly magazine, the Excel worksheet is a compilation of all the technical article headings in those mags including the date of the magazine that each entry refers to; I am trying to link up that date to the corresponding PDF file of that particular mag.
    I hope that makes sense.

It is pretty late now but I think I have solved the problem, will sleep on it and try again in the morning.
    Will keep you posted.

Well it is back to the drawing board, I was able to get the link to work from a couple of cells but not on others; that really throws me.
I cannot see why some cells function and others do not, comparing the paths they should work.
