Convert feet and inches to decimal feet

Hi! I am working in excel 2003 and I need to convert feet and inches into decimal feet.
Example: 15'-10 5/8" to 15.88542

15'-10 5/8" will be in say, column B, and the conversion will be in say, column Q.

This formula will be copied all the way down the page.

Any thoughts on how to do this or can it even be done in this version?

Thanks for the help in advance.

=(left(a2,find("-",a2,1)-1)+0)+(mid(a2,find("-",a2,1)+1,find(" ",a2,1)-find("-",a2,1))/12)+(mid(a2,find(" ",a2,1)+1,1)/right(a2,1)/12)

Palmetto, I tried the formula but it didn't work. I got #value! for an error.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Thanks,

Another option is to use text-to-columns. If you set it to fixed width, you can add seperators where you want them, then put in a formula to just add the 2 numbers together
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Try this,

Consider data starts from B2 to down.

In Q2,

=LEFT(B2,FIND("-",B2)-2)+SUBSTITUTE(REPLACE(B2,1,FIND("-",B2),""),CHAR(34),"")/12

then copy down.

Haseeb Avarakkan you are fantastic! Thank you very much. One thing that I noted was that if your measurement has a fraction in the inches with a number in front of the fraction you need to adjust the formula. EX: 51'-1/2" vs 51'-1 3 1/2". The first example will not calculate. Overall great time saving formula.
Thank you

What is the edit to include the whole number in front of the fraction?

If you have a time, could you please explain how this formula works, or may you advise an article to study?
Very nice, very helpful, thank you very much!

Haseeb A,
That formula worked great for me but is there any way it can be modified to accept negative numbers.
I have points from AutoCAD like -373'-2 1/16" which return an error "value"

Cheers
