What does " " Mean in Formula

I found a formula that I use in my check register type sheet. H is the balance column, F is the subtractions, and G is the additions. It will only show the balance if there is data in the row. It works great. I just do not understand why it works. Does anyone know what the "" means?

    =IF(AND(ISBLANK(F6),ISBLANK(G6)),"",H5-F6+G6)

    Thanks

That means to return a blank (i.e. a string with nothing in it - note this is not the same as " " which you put in your heading, as that would return a single space character). Basically, the formula is saying If F6 and G6 are both blank then return a blank otherwise return the calculation.

    Hope this helps.

Just means set the cell value to blank, so it doesn't show anything confusing.

    Hi,

If cells F6 and G6 are both blank, empty, leave this cell blank (" "); if not, sum H5-f6+g6.

Thanks for the information. The formula works, I just wasn't sure why. I am going to try and use it on other spreadsheets that I have. I didn't want the last balance to appear all the down the balance column, unless there was data in the row. Thanks

Thanks for the help. I did not solve the problem myself. I had a formula that was working. but I wanted to know what the symbols "" meant in the formula. Members of the fourm answered my question. Thanks, I will make this thread as solved.
