Rank 4 Columns of Data with Formula

    Hello Excel Forum,

I have four columns of data with integers in each cell ranging from 0 - 6. The numbers in the cells are not known beforehand and the number of rows is large. I'm wanting to find a formulaic solution that does not use visual basic if possible. Here is an example data set:

    [1] [2] [3] [4]
    5 1 0 3
    3 5 4 1
    2 1 3 5
    6 4 2 4
    3 5 5 3
    5 2 4 4

Column One is the most important; if the lowest number in that column is not found twice in that column, then the row that it belongs to is ranked 1. If column one has a tie for the lowest (e.g. 1, 1, 2, 4, 4, 5, 6), then column two is checked. The lower of the two numbers in column two then determines the rank of the row. This process continues until all the rows are ranked. How can I do this? It abstractly relates to a larger problem. Example attached- thanks!

    Will

I may not have explained myself well enough. I see what you did and that would be useful for a little different application. The solution occurred to me and I attached it. Thanks, Will.
