How to merge different copies of a shared workbook

Excel help indicates that if a worksbook is saved as a shared workbook it also allows the merging of different versions of the workbook.

However, except if I am overlooking something somewhere, I can find no explanation how two workbooks are merged.

    Please assist?

Does it? The point of sharing a workbook is that more than one person can work on the same one without the need to maintain many versions of it and merge at a later point. They are not suitable for a lot of applications though and can be a right pain.

Thanks for you reply. I don't doubt what you say, but, seeing that you posed a question, regards it prudent to explain where I got it from.

I copy and paste from the "Help" file:
"On the Review tab, in the Changes group, click Share Workbook.

In the Share Workbook dialog box, on the Editing tab, select the Allow changes by more than one user at the same time. This also allows workbook merging check box
    ".

What do they refer to with "This also allows workbook merging..."?

I think that might be a bit misleading. When a workbook is shared more than one person can open a copy of it at once and periodically the changes that each user makes are updated into the shared copy and displayed. There is no facility for merging distinct copies of the workbook.
