    Simple conditional formatting

    Hi All, i have used simple conditional formatiing to have a cell turn red if its contents do not match the contents of another target cell. I have used a second rule to turn the cell green when the cell does match the same target cell.
    The problem I have is when i copy down the formatiing the cells automatically turn red because at this stage there is neither data in the target or formatted cell.

    What i require is for the cell to stay its normal colour (white default) until I enter a number.
    I have tried using a couple of =isblank formula but with no success. Perhaps the initial usage of conditional formatting was not a good choice.

    any help appreciated

    Re: Simple conditional formatting

    You will have to change the CF condition to a formula and use AND to ensure non blank cell.

    e.g. =AND(A1<>"",A1<>B1)
    Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Hmm I tried your suggestion but cells remain red when there is no entry in the goal cell.
    =and(j4<>"",j4<>c4) used for red format. Same for green but j4=c4

    actually that is only working as i have space barred through the cells. Have now removed the space from formula and re-opened book and all is fine.
    many thanks

    Re: Simple conditional formatting

    That means your cells have a space in them rather than being truly empty....
