Question Old excel formulas using $

    Hi,
I am not a computer/excel whiz and years ago we used $ to make a cell a constant in other cells...hope that makes sense. Anyway what is the new procedure. Example: I have $40 in Cell A1 and .75 in B1. I then want to use those numbers * each other in different cells so when I need to change the $40 or the .75 it will change the other cells. Gosh I hope I am making sense.

$ still sets the relative/absolute addressing - so no change as far as I know

if you want to always use cell A1 and B1 where ever you copy the cells formula

    than

    = $A$1 * $B$1

    Hi Gardengirl...

I really haven't understood what you are trying to do....

Are you saying that if you change the value in cell A1 to $30, then you want the value of another cell to change as well????

The dollar sign, $, is an absolute "Anchor" for a cell reference only.

$A1 dragged down wil return $A2, $A3, $A4, etc. It will not change if dragged Across.

    Similarly
A$1 dragged Across will return B$1, C$1, D$1, etc. It will not change if dragged Down

$A$1 will remain fixed wherever it is dragged.

If the cell you are dragging contains a monetry value such as $40.00 the dollar sign has no effect in the results.

If this is what you want to know, then this is one good explanation...
