populating data in one sheet from another

Hi All, I have a spreadsheet that requires input from several departments.
basically i wanted to somehow copy the cells from the main spreadsheet which will be read only to each departments tab (sheet) which will be passworded.

I have the main spreadsheet sheet finished which shows all of the detail in one sheet and was hoping I could simply copy cells A to H to department 1's tab and then department 2's cells (G to K) etc and then create a link that would let the user update the data in their departments tab without having to see or scroll all the way to their section in the main spreadsheet. I know (well I think I know) that i can go to the main spreadsheet and in each cell do an = and link to the corresponding cell in the required department sheet but this seems like a long way around.

Does this sound feasible and Am i going about it the correct way?

Re: populating data in one sheet from another

Hi,please see uploaded file. Firstly i created the "full detail2 sheet and then copied and pasted the engineering cells to an engineering sheet.
I would like to be able to update the engineering sheet and have it populate the corresponding cells on the full detail sheet.
When I first copied the cells from full detail to engineering i got a small info icon that gave me the choice of linking the cells.
At this point my PC froze and when i tried again I did not get the same info icon so I could not try out the link oprion.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated even if I have to start the shole project again.

    regards Maax

Re: populating data in one sheet from another

    Hi maax555,

    you are saying:-
"I would like to be able to update the engineering sheet and have it populate the corresponding cells on the full detail sheet"
    and then you are saying:-
"When I first copied the cells from full detail to engineering i got a small info icon that gave me the choice of linking the cells"

    So my question is:-
Do you want to update engineering sheet manually and product sheet etc ... and all these data should come into Full detail automatically ?
    OR
Do you want to update Full detail sheet manually and respective data form here will automatically move to engineering sheet or production sheet etc ?

Assuming first option, my suggestion would be to have some king of row identifier i.e, Engg1, Engg2 etc on engineering tab and pro1, pro2 on production sheet... so that when you enter engg1, for example, on Full detail sheet, the respective data can be look up (fetched) from engineering tab to full detail tab. Thanks.

Hi, I want to update the engineering, account management, purchasing and production sheets manually which will automatically populate the full detail sheet. I have progressed a little further but its a little messy and I am having trouble with cells populating with dates when i copy the formula down through the sheet. I also just noticed that i have missed the Part numbers off some of the sheets which i can fix easily.

Does no one have any thought or suggestions on how to improve or tidy up this sheet? Particularly the dates that are copying down, I would rather have blank cells until a date is added.

    thanks

    Hi maxx555,

See the attached file and look into Engineering section in full details sheet. Thanks.

Re: populating data in one sheet from another

I have now applied the same formula to the other applicable area's of the sheet and it has improved the appearance greatly.

A nice little touch i was interested in is if the sheet would automatically only allow certain preset users to edit each sheet.
So for example i could set three or four user names which would automatically be allowed to edit the engineering sheet but none of the others.
This would be based on user name in excel settings. I know this could easily be changed to allow editing of a sheet which would normally be locked.
Alternativaly a better more complex solution (i think) would be to have user access based on windows log in.

Is this getting a little to complicated now :-)

    thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Maax555,

Instead of user access based windows log-in, I would suggest you to look into the option "Allow users to Edit Ranges" in Excel. Thanks.
