Incorrect Circular Reference with TODAY() function

    Afternoon,

I am having a problem in a fairly complex excel spreadsheet in that about half the time I open it I get a Circular Reference warning for a TODAY() function that I have on the summary page. Sometimes I can close the book and re-open it and it goes away but other times it just keeps coming up.

It's really annoying as it means when I change anything I have to then cancel the warning.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? What I can do to stop it?

    Thanks,

    Alice

Go to the Formulas tab, then in the Formula Auditing section, click on the drop down arrow next to Error Checking button and select Circular Referencing. This should show you the cell or cells where the circular reference is occurring.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Hi Alice,

You can go to Formulas tab -> Error Checking and here you can find and correct the circular reference. Thanks.

Re: Incorrect Circular Reference with TODAY() function

Thanks but my problem is not locating the circular reference, but understanding why excel is flagging it up.

The formula in the cell it is referrring is just =TODAY()

I just don't understand why this would be giving me a circular reference.

    Thanks,

    Alice

Re: Incorrect Circular Reference with TODAY() function

Turns out this was something messed up in my excel which was incorrectly finding circular references (it was actually finding blank cells and identifying them as well).

I've reinstalled my excel now and it seems to have solved the problem.

    Thanks for your help!

    Ok... that's good.
But I would still suggest you to look into circular reference and try corrrecting them so that they do not come up in future.

    Cheers
