Post Overall Average using the result of the average without referencing back to the raw data

    Hi -

I don't know if this is possible or not, so here's the situation... on the attached file there is an overall average of 98.72% coming from two individuals and there is also an average for each individual 99.23% for Rubylee and 97.83% for Michael... Now here's the question is there a way to get the overall average using only the result of the average of the individuals without referencing back to the raw data?

    Thank you

Do you class =AVERAGE(D2,D3) as referencing the raw data?

No... referencing the raw data is using back the B2:B23 in the formula.....

    @hudas:

if you mean what @darknation144 has mentioned, then your results will not be the same.

also, if you look at your raw data, many data points have been rounded up. if you average averages, that rounding-up effect will be eradicated effecting a different final result.

If I use =AVERAGE(D2,D3) the result will be 98.53% not 98.72%.... the result should be 98.72%..B]

The problem is Michael and Rubylee have taken different amounts of tests. You need to have a count of how many tests they each did but that references the origin data.

Can you not have another cell counting how many tests they have done?

Can I ask why you are not allowed to reference the original data?

Ok.. so it is impossible for that to happen... I thank both of you for the time you've give me. Have a wonderful day!

    Hi Hudas,

My answer is that it is an WRONG to average percentages. You are trying to do an illegal math operation. Let me do a short example for you.
I hate homework and never do it. I get a zero percent on my homework scores. I love tests and get perfect scores or 100%. Do I get a 50% for my final grade?

What happens if homework is worth 10% of the grade and tests are 90% of the grade?

You CAN NOT average percentages. The reason is that percentages come from fractions and the base (denominator) of each fraction is different.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

@MarvinP If I understand your statement clearly your saying that I cannot average a percentage because they have different denominator, what if the denominator is the same... the percentage on the attached file is computed with the same denominators. I would never average a percentage with different denominator coz its just not right, though I understand your statement... Thankyou

@darknation144 I can have another cell counting how many test they have done... though I do not know where this is going... I'm confuse..Im sorry..
@darknation144 Becuase If I am going to reference the original data I'm going to need to do another set of lenghty codes just to get the result of the overall total..becuase the first set of codes that I wrote gets the result of the average for each individual.

So if you have counted correctly Rubylee = 14 and Michael = 8.

Multiply Rubylee's avg by 14, add it to Michael's avg multiplied by 8. Then you have an amount which you divide by 14+8. That gives you the answer you want. But I strongly advise you just average the entire amount it uses less comutational power.

    AVG.xlsx

    Look at cell D9
