    Formats changing by themselves

All of a sudden, one of my spreadsheets wherein I had columns of numbers now appear formatted as dates. Any idea how this could happen? Many of the changes even occurred on sheets that were protected. I have never seen this happen before, and would love to figure out what happened.

    Thanks

    Hi Davidns,

Do you have any VBA code in the specific WorkBook?

    Re: Formats changing by themselves

Excel will automatically format cells when some thing happen. Let's say columns A and B are formatted as GENERAL. In cell A1 you enter a date string like "1/1/2012". Excel will normally consider that a date and it will associate a date value and format with cell A1.
Now, in cell B1 we enter a formula "=A1+1". Since A1 is considered a date and we are using it's value within a formula in the B1, B1 will be considered a date as well.

Winon, the answer is no. Dennis, my point is that after saving and reopening a spreadsheet, the formatting seems to have changed, so it's a different scenario that what you mention. Hasn't happened again today, so maybe I am safe, but was sure bizarre yesterday.
