    Validation error message when data does not yet exist.

    Hi,

    Can you help me? I'm trying to put an error message on the look up field when I enter a certain employee and if data or employee number is not yet on the database. I'm working with validation and with this formula =if(c4<>range,1,0) and it does not work.
    Hope you can help me with new formulat that could work.

    Thanks in advance!

    it would help if you posted a sample sheet. However if you are using vlookup, it will return an error automatically if the data point is not found.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply. Attached is a sample excel file that I am working with. On the summary sheet, if I enter a certain employee number on C4 and if its not on the list of employee number on raw data sheet it will give me an error message. Validation formula will be a great help.

    Thanks in advance!

    Try this formula in data validation

    =ISNUMBER(MATCH(C4,'RAW DATA'!$A:$A,0))
    Does that work for you?

    @rodge:

    are you talking about the #NA that appear in the 'User's Basic Information' area when an Employee Number does not exist, or the VB Error Message that you get when that condition is encountered?

    Sorry, I believe you can't directly reference cells in another spreadsheet with Excel 2003. I used your defined name EmployeeIDs and it seems to be working.

    =ISNUMBER(MATCH(C4,EmployeeIDs,0))
    Check the uploaded file.
