    Long numbers not displaying properly

Hi everyone, first post so I hope somebody can answer this one...

I have a csv file where one of the fields is a long number, for example 990737587638. When I open the csv in Excel 2000 (and also in some later versions I have tried this on) the number displays as 9.90738E+11. My thoughts were that I just needed to format the sheet as text and save it somehow before opening the csv file but I can't figure out how to do it.

What can I do to save my default spreadsheet as text so that these numbers appear as 12 digit text strings on opening or am I trying to do this the wrong way?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Long numbers not displaying properly

Thanks for the reply. If I open the csv file using Excel then format the cells that works OK. What I am trying to do is find a way that when I open the csv file, it opens in Excel with the field displaying the number properly.

I was hoping there was some setting that I could change to save an Excel file as the default in the same folder as the csv files so that when I opened the csv file it was already formatted correctly and I didn't need to do the formatting every time (I have a lot of csv files).

Re: Long numbers not displaying properly

    Hello again,

I attached two screenshots to show what is happening here in case I hadn't described it very well. File1-Text is a typical csv file with long numbers, File1-Excel is what happens when I open it using Excel.

Hope somebody can help with this.
