    Conditional formatting on Mulitple Cells

    Hi,

I have 3 columns of data 10 rows long. (A-C ; 1-10). What I want to do is add Conditional Formatting to cells B1:B10 and C1: C1:C10 based on what's in A1:10 and B1:10 respectively.

So if B1 is less than A1 give me a down arrrow (or whatever) and if C1 is greater than B1 give me an up arrow.

I can do them all individually but is there a way to highlight all cells and apply a formula? I have quite a lot...

    Thanks.

    Hi

    Highlight your range(B1:B10)

Then in Conditional Format, rules>>>Formula is.

    1) =$a1>$b1 >>>Choose color

    2) =$a1<$b1 >> Choose color
    Regards

Re: Conditional formatting on Mulitple Cells

Thanks for the speedy reply Fotis but this hasn't quite worked - I didn't really explain too well.

What I want to do specifically is use an icon set. When I highlight everything and apply the Conditional Format it uses the first cell (ie A1) as the cell against which to judge everything highlighted. What I want it to do is judge the selected cell against the cell on it's left.

It insists on having the cell entered as =$A$1 and therefore keeps this cell for everything but if I remove either or both $'s it says "You cannot use relative references in Conditional Formatting criteria for color scales, data bars, and icon sets". This seems to suggest that I can't do what I want but it's not entirely clear (or at least not to me).

..For me, now, is not clear.

Maybe a sample workbook that you will upload, will help.

Althought it says $A$1 it does change if you apply the formula to other cells. Conditional formatting doesn't work the same as cell formulas.
