I'm sure this feature has a use for some people but I find it strange and confusing, not helpful at all. Can I remove this feature while keeping all the individual sheets now associated with it intact? Thank you for your help.

Just rename it and move it to a different folder.

Not sure what you mean. Every Excel sheet I create no matter what I name the sheet comes up associated with this Personal.xls folder. When I click the excel icon expecting to create a new blank sheet, I am always presented with a Personal.xls folder offering me a new sheet?
Personal.xls is a workbook stored in your XLSTART folder -- it is not automatically created, and is typically created deliberately be specifying it as the home for a recorded macro. Where XLSTART is located depends on your OS. Search for Personal.
