    @khanabadosh:

    disregard the condescending humour; it is only an insignificant minority that practice that type of kitsch on this forum.

    see if the attached file helps...

    CSE, aka Array aka { }, formulae are confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.
    Replace commas ( , ) with semicolons ( ; ) in formulae, if your locale setting demands.
    All good ideas are courtesy resources from this forum as well as others around the web.

    please read rule 1
    having said that what you are trying to achieve seems relatively simple
    in c2 put =A2
    in c3 put =IF(A3="",c2,A3)
    drag down

    @martindwilson:

    thank you for the negative rep "sense of humor filure!"

    it is of absolutely no consequence to me, because i am not on this forum for the reps. i am here to learn, for the joy of it, from gurus like yourself, albeit, only the good stuff, not the churlishness. i have been around for 8 years on this forum and have only but once asked for a "rep" and shamed myself and never did that again. this "rep" business is for people who care for it and i do not begrudge them that, but certainly not the first or the last, or anywhere in between, reason for my being here, so please save your breath.

    au contraire, i would say to you that it was a failure of civility on your behalf towards someone whose native language is not English. may be the individual does not know to explain well in words and hence provided sample data to indicate what he was looking for. i have a sense of humour but it stops short of mockery. i will appreciate your sense of humour more whenever if you stop short of it, too.

    and, thanks for providing a solution that is simple and commonsensical - i complicated it too much. this is what makes you great, not the other stuff.
