Conditional Formatting according to value of another cell

    Hi everyone,

I know this is a rather easy question, but quite frankly, my brain is kinda fried and google isn't exactly helping me find the solution.

    Column A contains names.
Column H contains data validation list consisting of "Pass" and "Fail".

If the user selects "pass" from H2 (for example), I want the name in A2 to be one color; Conversely, I want it to be a different color if "Fail" is selected. I'm pretty sure this is 2 separate conditional formats that can be set to the same cells... I just need to get the right formula for one and then modify it to work for the other and just choose a different color.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

apply conditional formatting to A2. the formula is $H$2 = "Pass" and $H$2 = "Fail"

hehehe, yes JieJenn, that part i have... (thank you) But, now how to have that rule be something like this:

If $H(Row#)="Pass", then make $A(Row#) one color, etc for the other color???

There's going to be many rows with student names; Can't one create a rule for the column so that the color will change according to whatever value is set in the corresponding H column row?

Then you will have to highlight Range($A1:$A whatever), then you will to remove the dollar sign before the row # from $H$(row#) to $H(row#). You were right, you need to apply conditional formatting twice, one for pass, and one for fail.
