Excel 2007 : Cannot Shift Objects Off Sheet

I have recently been getting the above error when trying to hide or group a large number of columns in a spreadsheet, the result being that I cannot hide the columns or group the columns. Why do I get this error message? And what can I do to overcome this?

Do CTRL-End - this will take you to the cell that Excel thinks is the last-used cell. However, this may be well beyond the last column that you have used and/or beyond the last row that you have used, as Excel is not very good at recovering memory from those unused columns/rows. If this is the case with your sheet, then you can highlight all the columns to the right of your last column and then click the Delete icon, and do the same for the rows below your last used row. Then you must SAVE the workbook for this to take effect. Now if you do CTRL-End again, it should take you to the correct last-used cell, and then you should be able to do the operations you describe.

I think whatever you are doing would effectively move the comments off the right hand side of the sheet.
