Is it possible to see all the data in an Excel cell in the 2010 version?

In old versions of Excel you could write a lot of data in one cell without the cell's dimensions being affected. In the 2010 version I cannot see all of the data (only what fits within the cell). To see the remainder I have to click on "Wrap text" but this changes the height of the cell, which I don't want.

Is it possible to have things the old way in the 2010 version?

I'm not talking about if the cell to the right is empty or not. I'm talking about entering 20 lines of text (or more!) within a single cell and being able to read them when I click on them. The new version is not able to do this.

Do you mean F2 click while having selected the cell?

there is a small "pull-down" on the top right of the formula bar (well its there in 2007 anyway). If you click on that, it makes more of the cell contents visible in the formular bar, and you can drag the window down to make it larger to see more.

not sure if that will help, but i find it useful for editing lengthy formulas
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Thanks, both of those make things a little bit better. But it's still annoying having to either click F2 or use the scroll down function.

On the old Excel versions when you clicked on a cell the ENTIRE contents was visible in the toolbar window. It dropped down to whatever size was necessary - no F2 no scrolling - so you could read the entire thing in an instant.

Why did anyone think that replacing the old system with scrolling arrows would be an improvement?

well with the option i suggested, unless you click the "pull-down", it stays like that, you shouldnt have to keep pulling it down every time. granted, it cuts into how much of the actual worksheet you can see IF the window is large, but i personally think it is an improvement in that, if you click on a cell with a latger formula in it, it often blocked out the column letters so you couldnt see which column you may want. swings and round-abouts perhaps, i can see pro's and con's to both sides

I guess you're right FD, for MY data (sometimes a whole page from a book was cut and paste into the cell) it was way better before but I can see that if people just have a few words in cells (and doubtless that's the great majority of users) then 2010 isn't going to make any difference to them. There's probably another package out there that would be better suited for what I currently try to do on Excel!
