Question Trying to figure out VLOOKUP and Conditional formatting

    Hello everyone,

This is my first post, I am Chris and I am from South Africa - There that is out of the way.

I am trying to do something in a workbook I created in Excel 2010.

    I have a workbook with 4 sheets.
On the 3rd sheet I have a list of ID numbers that I need to give additional info on.
The ID numbers listed on the 3rd sheet are all listed on the first sheet.

I have had issues where I enter a different ID number than I did on the 1st sheet.
I would like to apply conditional formatting to the cells containing the ID numbers on the 3rd page, they must look up a value on the first page and indicate weather the number is listed on the first sheet and if not then highlight the cell red.

The issue I am having is that the numbers are not listed in a specific order, the only thing that is the same for each number is that they are all in the same column. So there could be 5 rows or 50 rows between each number.

I have tried VLookup but I cannot get it right and just using conditional formatting returns an error "this type of reference cannot be used in conditional formatting"

If anyone has a solution please share it with me, this is driving me crazy.

    Thanks,
    Christopher
