    Angry Turning off date formatting?

I frequently have use the "text to columns" function to split addresses contained in one column into separate columns for street number, street name etc. The street number column causes me constant problems. Any address that contains a backslash (e.g. 4/13 Smith Street) or a dash (e.g 2-4 Smith Street) turn into dates in the receving column, regardless of how I format that column. If I try to refomat it after it has received the data, the dates turn into 5 digit numbers (e.g. 51366). Can anyone help me avoid this happening? Manually correcting them all is absorbing a crazy amount of my time! I found a suggestion to uncheck the "Extend data range formats and formulas" box but this has not helped.

Hello and welcome to the forum,

When performing the text to columns, don't just click Finish, keep going to the last options menu. There you will find each column that will receive the data and change the data type ot he column with the street number to "text". That should prevent Excel's internal correction mechanisms from kicking in.
