Red face Is it possible to do Conditional Formatting that result in TEXT display not color change?

    Hi everyone,

EDIT: If you don't think the below is possible, please let me know by posting here so I can move on and try other stuff. Thanks.

I was wondering if it is possible and how if so to do conditional formatting on a bunch of cells but instead of having those cells changing colour, the cells would display text like "Error" or something.

So if I select a bunch of cells, I want all those cells to display "Error" if the following xxx conditions are met. The cells I am selecting already have formulas and I dont want to have to do an IF statement for each individual cell.

Thanks for your help! Also could you please explain in detail on how because I am not very familiar with excel :p

    Btw i have excel 2010.

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

Formatting, conditional or otherwise, is just that. It can't change the underlying value of the cell only make it look different.

I'm not clear whether your cells already evaluate to errors like #N/A or whether you need to introduce some IF tests to the cells (which you can do en bloc with Find and Replace) .

Upload an example workbook with some notes showing examples of results that you expect to see.

Hi thanks for replying, no I don't have evaluation of errors of If statements. Uhhh is it possible then to create like a watermark or something instead of changing the value?

    Hello,

It's simple enough to modify the current formulae so that they show "Error" if an IF test requires them to do so. You won't need to do it cell by cell it can be done en bloc as I said.

However I need to see the workbook and understand what IF test you want to apply, so upload an example workbook with some specific notes showing a before and after situation.

Ah don't worry about it Richard, I just figured out how to do it with an alternative method in order to get what I wanted. Thanks though!

with 2010 you can apply custom number formatting in conditional formats so as long as your formulas return something, you can display whatever text you like.

It could be possible depending on the criteria, without knowing more we can only guess.

For example, using a custom cell format (not conditional format) of

    [<0]"error";General

would display 'error' in place of any negative values, while displaying anything else in standard format.
