    bookkeeping formula

Hi, this is my first post. Really struggling with how to go about this. Your help would be very much appreciated.

    spreedsheet.png

I have uploaded a screen dump. What I would like help with is in cell M7 I have managed to create a drop down list. What I want is when I choose the category, for example postage, then I would like the contents in cell J6 to automatically copy to cell D6. Then the same goes for the other categories.

    Regards

    Pete

    Re: bookkeeping formula

hi peeteruk, welcome to the forum. so as long as Column M has something chosen, Column D should have the value of Column J? try this in D7:
    =IF(M7<>"",J7,"")

upload an Excel file if what i explained does not work

Thanks, if you have clicked on the * and added our rep.

    Re: bookkeeping formula

Hi Benishiryo, Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the formula does not work for me. I have uploaded a spreadsheet that contains the right facility I am looking for.[ATTACH]163273[/ATTACH. I should have just clicked the cell and the formula appeared.vlookup =IF($J10=$F$517,$E10,0. Although I have tried to use it on my spreadsheet with difficulty. I will update to let you know if it works.

    regards

    Re: bookkeeping formula

hmmm, your printscreen & the Excel file here is different. basing on this Excel file & the formula you gave, i'm guessing you are looking at cell T10 formula? And it seems like your formula will give you the right result, but not easy to copy to another column. if what i understand is correct, you should be putting in:
    =IF($J10=T$1,$E10,0)

That way, you can copy it throughout the whole of Column R:BE. But only if my understanding is right. You want to imply that if J10 is "Bad Debt", it should read E10. Otherwise, it should be 0?

    Re: bookkeeping formula

Hi I would like to use the r2 formula in the "bookkeeping vat1" spreadsheet and implement it in my spreadsheet.

So in the "bookkeeping vat1" uploaded I could type in the net cost (e2) then choose the category (j2), then it automatically places the net cost under the category I have chosen. for example accountants fees (r2).

    Hope that makes sense

    Re: bookkeeping formula

There's much simpler ways than this. I use a column for category then summarise the categories onto one master sheet. I've been using this method for years
    Hope that helps.
