Question I can't open this file no matter what. I've tried everything. HELP!!!!

I've downloaded a file, NPPES Data Dissemination, off the web. It's zipped, approx 400 mg. I use WinZip to unliz, end up with a CSV file, 4.15 gig in size. I've tried opening it in Excel 2010 - any nbr of ways:
    1. By double clicking on file itself.
    2. Open Excel in the safe mode, then opening file.
    3. Start Excel first, then select open the file Excel.
    4. Turned off all services, then retried nbr 1 thru 3.
    5. Used Gsplit to split the file up into 5 pieces, approx 1 gig each.

No matter what I try invariably I end up with this msg - Excel Cannot Complete This Task With Available Resources. I click ok, it opens it but no ribbon, just data grid.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro, Office 2010, WinZip Pro, V15, on a Dell Studio Desktop, 8 gigs of memory, 1000 gig hard drive, approx 850 gig free.

Can someone help or advise? BTW you can download the file, just google NPPES Data Dissemination.

I think you're not going to be able to open a file that size in Excel.

You could read the file in VBA, select some small fraction of the records based on whatever criteria interests you, and capture those in a worksheet. Or perhaps PowerPivot could help: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/bi/powerpivot.aspx

    Good luck.

    what version of winzip ?
The data dissemination file exceeds 4 GB. Older file compression utilities may not be able to extract this file properly
    also did you read this
As a result of the larger size, the .csv Header File can no longer be opened in Excel. Even so, the .csv Header File is small enough to be opened by a simple text editor like Notepad. As always, the .csv data file must be opened with a text editor capable of opening large files. Two examples are TextPad and UltraEdit.

WinZip 15.5 Pro. Supposedly, this version can handle in excess of 4 gigs.

But just found out Excel 2010 limits are 4 gig. Guess that might be the issue.

But even if Excel 2010 limit is 4 gig, I split the file into 5 pieces, each less then 1 gig, but still get the same msg - Excel Cannot Complete This Task With Available Resources.

Then tried to import in Access, friggin too many columns.
