    Unusual fraction to decimal

    Hi

I am wanting to input some commodities trading information and often prices are written as 5.22 and 6/32

    So it is 5.22 and 6 32nds.

I know how to do a normal fraction as a decimal, but how would you go about doing unusual one, where it maybe fractions of a cent like $1.43 and 1/3?

    Thanks in advance

    honkin

    Hi honkin,

See the attached. There is a Format of FRACTION. See if it works for you. You will need to put the 32nds in a separate cell.

    Re: Unusual fraction to decimal

    Hi Marvin

Thanks for trying, but that is not actually what asked. My apologies, as I may not have been clear enough.

I am not after a single fraction as a decimal, I am after a mixture. I already know how to do fractions to decimals and vice versa. This is different.

The 2 parts of the question are 1.

Some of the price quotes for things like commodities are done in fractions of a cent.

As an example, the price of corn may be quote as $5.63 1/4. So it is actually $5.63 and a quarter of a cent.

I mean I could certainly do the calculation to change 1/4 of a cent to decimal (.0025) and add the 2 together, but I thought Excel could do it all in 1.

    cheers

    Re: Unusual fraction to decimal

is your fraction in another cell?
    like this?

    A2 houses the 5.63 dollars
B2 houses the 1/4 or fraction

    =A2+ (B2/100)

    Re: Unusual fraction to decimal

    hi vlday

What answer do you get from that? 1/4 of a cent is 0.0025. Dividing it by 100 gets you 0.000025.

No, I want to be able to display something like $5.22 and 6/16 of a cent as a decimal. If I have to manually do the calculation manually, it defeats the purpose of using Excel.

If you see the difficulty, it is not 1/4 as a fraction I am trying to display as a decimal, it is 1/4 of a cent, or 9/16 of a cent or 17/32 of a cent. It's easy enough to calculate that 9/16 of a cent = $0.005625 and add that to the rest of the equation (so $5.22 + 1/4 of a cent would be $5.2225, but I want to be able to type in 1 cell 5.22 9/16 and have it formatted as a single decimal - $5.225625

I may be wrong, but I think it is possible. I was sure I had a commodities broker tell me how last year some time, but have lost his advice.

    thanks again

    honkin

It's certainly not common, but should be right up Excel's alley I would have thought.

    Re: Unusual fraction to decimal

say you entered in a single cell,,, Cell A10 ----5.22 1/4 so it becomes text we have to extract first whole and fraction...

    =((LEFT(RIGHT(A10,3),FIND("/",RIGHT(A10,3))-1)/MID(RIGHT(A10,3),FIND("/",RIGHT(A10,3))+1,255))/100)+("0" & LEFT(A10, FIND(" ", A10) ) ) + 0

    Re: Unusual fraction to decimal

    cheers vlady

Your attachment will be fine. I would have preferred to input the whole thing in 1 cell and it immediately becomes a decimal, but this will do the job for me, so thanks very much.

I couldn't get the formula you typed to do anything at all, unfortunately.

I typed 5.22 1/4 in cell A10 and then pasted the formula into B10, but found nothing happened.

It would certainly be the preferred way, so if I typed 5.22 1/4 in a cell and and have it immediately format it as 5.2225......that would be excellent. But if that is not possible, I'll just use multiple cells.

    thanks again vlady

    Hi vlady
A little shorter formula for D10 in your sheet above would be:
