    Post Writing indirect formula

    Hi,

    =INDIRECT("'"&A6&"'!C8")

I do use that formula and write it just by rote, without exactly knowing it.

Does anyone know that why " quotation marks, apostrophe ampersand stand for?

I am basically know that apostrophe is there for directing to sheets.

    Thanks

You should read the Excel Help on the INDIRECT function.
In essence, this function forces Excel to interpret a text string as a valid range reference.

The ampersand is used to join text strings together
The single apostrophe is used in combination with A6 (cell reference) that contains a sheet name
The quoation marks are required for each element (separated by the ampersand) to identify the text string.

    Does that help?

It would work without them too: =INDIRECT(A6&"!C8")

It needs the apostrophes if there is a space in the sheet name, otherwise you get a #REF error.

Thanks to all for quick reply.

Zbor, i tried the formula you wrote, it works but not for the sheets that have space their name..

So Cutter you are right, it doesnt work. So what is the formula for sheets which "space in the sheet name"?

İ tried =INDIRECT("A6&"!C8"") and =INDIRECT('A6&"!C8"') both of them do not work!

    Re: Writing indirect formula

The formula in your first post is correct for any sheet (space or no space) as it contains the single quote as part of the string.
