Excel 2007 : Cant use a descriptive word in my formula =(1.4 * 4 yards)

I am making a formula to include a description.

IE...

product price amount Cost
red fabric $1.50 4 yards =(price*amount)


thats the basics of what i am trying to do. I have made a drop down list for the amount as well if that matters. I understand the problem to be that my formula performs math on those cells by using the standard arithmetic operators (+, -, *, and /). How can i make the formula ignore the text in that field and still do the math.

What data is in each of the cells? Ideally, post a sample workbook with several examples.

I have attached a work book. In it I have used 2 dif. very simple formulas. Problem is that the system doesnt like the word yard or yards after the number. The goal is to get the formula to ignore the text but still multiply the numbers in the cell.

Simpler to change the header to quantity /yards, then use proper numbers in the cells. You could use a custom numberformat - 0 "yards".

@royUK it would be simpler accept that the data in that column wont all be something measurable in yards. It will be many dif. items. But thank you for your response.
