Can't close Excel file after opening it

I use a web-based application, from which, I download Excel files. I can open a file without any issues; however, I can't close the file. Once I click open, the file opens in my Excel (Office 2007), but when I close, I get this alert:

"This file is locked. Try the command again later."

I have to either completely shut down Excel or close it using the Task Manager. Is there a workaround to this problem?

I don't think so. They are various files uploaded by different users. I highly doubt that they are all shared files. Plus, once it's downloaded, the file location changes, and therefore, can no longer be a true shared file. But even it were shared, why wouldn't I be able to close the file?

That link talks about a workaround for saving the file, but in my case, I'm just trying to close/exit the file without saving.
