    vlookup, but for writing

    Hi Guys,

I need a function that acts in the same way of VLOOKUP but instead of copying the matched cell, I want to write in that cell.

    Is there anything like it?

    Thanks

You could use a HYPERLINK function to send you to that cell and then type your text there, probably in conjuction with INDEX and MATCH. If you attach a sample workbook with some further details then I could come up with a formula for you to use.

    Hope this helps.

Hey Pete, here you can find the workbook... https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5I...mZJMXVxSVdWSEE

On the sheet "source" I have to select the name, and by this name I fill up value. This value goes to the sheet "destination", in accordance with the name selected on the previous sheet.

I hope you can help me, this will drive a huge value on my work.

    Thanks again

I followed your link, but that looks nothing like an Excel workbook to me, and I don't know how to enter a formula into the cell next to Alice to try things out for you. You can attach files to posts in this Forum by clicking on Go Advanced while you are writing a post and then clicking on the paperclip icon (or Manage Attachments below your text). I suggest you do this and attach an Excel workbook here, and then hopefully I'll be able to help you.

In the attached file I have added a few more names to the Destination sheet and set up a named range called "names" covering A2 to A9.

In the Source sheet I have set up data validation on cell A2, so you can either type in a name or choose one from the drop-down in that cell. Once you choose a name the message "go there" will appear in cell B2, and if you click on this it will send you to the appropriate cell in column B of the destination sheet which corresponds to the name chosen, so that you can enter your text into that cell.

This is the formula in B2 of the Source sheet which enables it to happen:

    Formula: copy to clipboard
