ctrl+shift+up selection not working anymore (since 2 mounth - Office 2K3 / 2K7 / 2K10

Since 1 or 2 mouths, all my Excel :2003/2007/2010 can'u use the ctrl+shift+up selection.

Tested on Windows XP / Windows 7...

Exactly the same comportment.



Ctrl+shift+down is ok

Ctrl+shift+left is ok

Ctrl+shift+right is ok

Hi Kreg and welcome to the forum,

I'd suspect the keyboard itself. Something like a sticky key. Can you grab another keyboard and see if the same thing happens?

This makes no sense to me so how about a test.
Open a new workbook and on sheet 1 click in cell A15. Then Hold the Ctrl and Shift keys down and the press the Up Arrow. This should show the range from A1 to A15 selected. If not I'm still looking.

I've looked through the Excel Options for things like where the cursor moves when pressing enter. You can move down as the default or to the right. I don't see any option for this problem.

I'm now wondering about System Accessibility settings. These allow settings to be changed for people who can't use two hands or hold two keys down and press a third. Is there a chance you have Accessibility settings changed on your computers? Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky_keys

I believe there is a logical answer but we just don't know what it is yet.

Do you have any Event Macros in the workbook people are using? Does this happen on all Excel workbooks or only the one you work with daily?

VBA Event code could change the behavior of certain keystrokes.

Have you tried Ctrl+Shift+UpArrow in other applications besides Excel? I'm thinking virus here that would affect all apps. In Word the whole paragraph should be selected using this combination.

Ticking the transition navigation keys can have a similar (but not identical) effect to the one described but, like Marvin, I think that the cause lies outside of Excel. The question which only you can answer is what happened one or two months ago on all 6000 PCs? A new software release? A patch?

Yes but it makes no sense.
This can not be software. For my Masters XP are really different from my Master W7.
A patch is not excluded, but how to find it! : /
I also suspect something outside of Excel.

I'll try some keystrokes, but I'm not familiar with.

I found the solution.
The problem was related to a LANDesk module (Endpoint Security - viguard.exe).
The hotkey CTRL + SHIFT + UP is define by default in LANDesk to open a configuration window for this module. BUT hiddend for the end user. So this hotkey did nothing.


So I disabled the hotkey in LANDesk ... And Excel CTRL+SHIFT+UP works correctly

I wonder how other software companies can take control of the keyboard buffer with a standard for a Microsoft product?

I'm glad you found a solution. I'll include in my suggestions for the next person with this type of problem, to see if any other software is using the key combination for themselves.

For anyone having the issue where you USED to be able to hold CTL + up arrow, down arrow, left arrow or right arrow................ and all it does is move the worksheet a bit,

check the ScrLk key by hitting it once and then hold CTL + arrow.

That was my problem. Stupid Excel.

Here is LANDesk's response to how to change the hotkey; I believe the LANDesk Admin has to make these changes as the client user doesn't have access to the console.
