Text when formatted as number will not Sum

I have a text String XXXXXXXX500XXXX and I pull out the 500 in a cell (E3) using Right and Left functions. I have the cell E3 formatted as a number but it will not sum. I understand if I copy and paste special - Value, it will then work. But is there a better way I am not seeing?

When you extract it by formula it will become text. You must convert it to number by, for example, adding +0 to it.
So instead of =formula use =0+formula

This will return you error if formula return text and convert it to number if it return number.
