I don't understand what this means, or how it relates to your sample file. Please provide a more detailed explanation of what it is that you want to achieve.

Not sure what you're looking to match? What column(s) do you want to highlight and can you give an example of one from your upload?

If a phone number in the phone number column matches a phone number in the reference number column, I want the phone number in the phone number column to be highlighted. that is one out of 150 lists that I need to do this to.

Ahhh, select your range (i.e. E2:E99)
    Conditional Formatting>New Rule> Use Formula
    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Does that work for you?

Sorry, but I'm an excel noob, can you go step by step on how to apply the formula?

Select cell E2, hold down the <shift> key, press the <end> key once followed by <down-arrow>, and then release shift. With that block of data still highlighted, click on the Conditional Formatting icon, choose New Rule, then click on "Use a Formula ... ". In the Formula box put in this formula:

    =ISNUMBER(MATCH(E2,$F$2:$F$45,0))

then click on the Format button, then the Fill tab and choose your colour. OK your way out. Excel will automatically adjust the cell references to suit the highlighted range.

    Hope this helps.

In what way did it not work? Error message, highlighting wrong values, not highlighting at all ??

Go through the steps carefully again, and make sure that the formula is set up exactly as above. I've attached my version of your file so that you can see it working.

Try to understand what the formula is doing so that you can modify it on other files if you need to. If you have any questions on how it's working, feel free to ask.
