Useful feature in Lotus 123 - is there one in Excel 2010 ?

In Lotus 123 I used to be able to apply a range of names to an adjacent column of cells by selecting a range of names next to it. Is it possible to do the same in Excel 2010 please ?

For example by selecting the list of names below I want to apply these names to the cells B1 to B6 next to it... so that B1 has a range name of Oranges, B5 Limes and so on.

I've got several hundred range names I want to create so doing each one separately would be painful to say the least..

    A1 Oranges
    A2 Apples
    A3 Pears
    A4 Lemons
    A5 Limes
    A6 Bananas
    Terry

    Hi,

You don't say in your profile what version of Excel you have. It would be a good idea to do this.

The Excel method is similar whichever version you have.
With xl 2003 use Insert Name Create

With xl2007+ Use Formulas (Defined Names tab) Create from selection.

Will the name refer to the cell with the name in it?
    Hope that helps.

I thought I did say it was Excel 2010 ? Anyway thank you for pointing me in the right direction which is a great help.

Though I had a bit of an unpredictable result with the text '7.02-SDI' resulting in '_7.01_SDI' in the range names. Why is this ?

    Hi,

You did mention in your post that it was xl 2010, but I was referring to your profile which doesn't show that.

If you add it to your profile then in any future postings we'll know.

    Hi,

    From Excel Help re Names.

Valid characters. The first character of a name must be a letter, an underscore character (_), or a backslash (\). Remaining characters in the name can be letters, numbers, periods, and underscore characters.

    Richard

I'll update accordingly now. I've only just finally had xl2010 rolled out after having had xl2007 for a while. Still finding the ribbon taking a bit of getting used to.
