A complete newbie - please help with a password problem

    Hi everyone,

I am a basic Excel user i.e. I input data and that is about it.

However, I am trying to find out how to allow users to input data but put a password in to stop deletion of contents (so that only I can do that). Can anyone help please?

    Thanks x

By the way it is Excel 2007

You cannot allow inputting data but stop the user from editing or deleting that data
    Hope that helps.

Is there no way of doing this at all RoyUK?

I'm sure there can't only be me who would find this useful?

    Alexisemma,

In Excel, you can Protect parts of a spreadsheet (like Titles and where the formulas are) and then Unprotect areas (like where you want people to input data).

But like Roy said, any unprotected area is fair game to any user; data in that area can be entered, deleted, changed etc.

So, what do you need to do exactly?

Why don't you have a separate file for the data inputters to use, and then they send it to you so that you can do what you like with it.

Re: A complete newbie - please help with a password problem

We use a spreadsheet at work to keep a record of shops we have visited. However we have had a few problems recently with data being accidentally deleted. What I'd like to be able to do is protect the cells containing shop name, code, address etc so they can't be dleted but allow the team to input dates visited. Can I do this?

I know I can password protect the whole worksheet but this then stops my team from inputting the dates.

    Help!

    alexisemma31,

When I want to do what you've described, I protect the sheet and have a userform for users to enter information on. On the userform is a Submit button (or similar, like OK, or Done, etc) that programatically unprotects the sheet, enters the information to the sheet, and then reprotects it.

However, creating and coding the userform is not a simple task for a beginner, and you're unlikely to find people that will create it for you.
    Hope that helps,
