    Substitutions

Hi all, I’m new to the site and a bit of an Excel chump…

Basically what I want to do is import some numeric data and have excel substitute it to a different number,

For example if I was to enter '12 4/1/2', I would want this combination to be changed to simply say '5'. From what I understand I can substitute this easily however the data that I’m importing has about 1000 different combinations all of which I would want to change to different numbers depending on the combo, can excel do this? If so do I use Substitution or something else?

Thanks so much for your help!

What else do you have in your imported values and what do you expect returned?
