    VLookup / Lists

    Hello I have two questions:

    (1)

How to use VLookUP that allows a selection from a list in cell A1 change what is in cell B1 Example:

    If A1 = A, then B1 = 1
    If A2= C, then B2 = 3

with column A being selected from a list and the table being on Sheet 2 which looks like:
    (A) (B)
    A 1
    B 2
    C 3
    D 4

    (2)

How can I get a selection from a list in, say, A1 affect the options in list B1?

    Thanks!!!

    something like this?
    Attached Files Attached Files
    - i.s.z -
CSE, aka Array aka { }, formulae are confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.
Replace commas ( , ) with semicolons ( ; ) in formulae, if your locale setting demands.
All good ideas are courtesy resources from this forum as well as others around the web.

In that attached file, If I select "A" in A1 and A2 it only allows B1 to select "1" B2 is blank.

for question (2) I suppose it is best to describe it as follows:

    if A1 and B1 are both list cells and without any input they are as follows A1 = "A, B, C" B1= "1, 2, 3"

    then when I select A1 = A, B1's options are limited to "1"

do you mean to say that you will have a data validation list in A1, wherein you intend to capture more than one value into the same cell?

if so, i am afraid, that is not possible without VBA.

    Re: VLookup / Lists

I got it figured out. For Part A I used a similar format to what icestationzbra suggested. I am still unsure how to get vlookup to allow multiple same rows. That is, whenever I would use the value found in H1 in both A1 and A2 only B1 would retrieve what was in I1 ("the description") and B2 would be left blank.

For part B, I am a newbie, and forgot that I could put commands in the data validation window so what I ended up using is IF and a string thereof.

Thanks for the help. If someone has a better way to do Option 1 I'm all ears. If I don't see anything within the day or so I'll change the topic to solved.
