Sorted data in drop list (data validation)

    Hi,

When I create a drop list by means of data validation, the options displayed are not sorted, since my data source is neither sorted (due circumstances).

Is there any smart way to display the options sorted in the drop list, without changing its source?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello ONB,

With Drop Down lists what you see is what you get. There are no options or settings to direct the list to sorted before being displayed. You will have to sort the list yourself. Select the range that contains your list. On the main menu select Data > Sort... If you add information to your list later, you will need to resort it.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for your reply.

That is the issue, it is impractical for me to sort the source data (data is dynamic and embodies quite some data).

Maybe a VBA feature could accomplish this.

    Thx anyway,

Re: Sorted data in drop list (data validation)

    I have the same issue.

I have a list of staff ordered by their team number. I wanted to use this same list in a validation drop-down menu but have it sorted by name and not team without having a seperate list. It seems very strange that Excel can do all these wonderful things and not this. Obviously I could create another list with the same names and order them, but really there should be a function built-in to the validation list. It's a very common thing and I would have thought easy for Microsoft to implement. I could be wrong though.
